Automated Gong

Materials

Brass gong, wood and rubber mallet, MDF panelling, black PLA filament, Raspberry Pi Pico, positional servo motor, potentiometer, breadboards, 30W DC power supply, USB-C cable, USB-C female connector, jumper wire, styrofoam, polyethylene twine, machine grease, wood adhesive, spray paint

Techniques

Electronic engineering, PWM position control, MicroPython programming, ISO fit system for holes

Tools

Trotec Speedy100R laser cutter, Prusa i3 MK3S+ 3D printer, Siemens NX

My goal with this project was to create an automated gong for use in meditation, with the ability to manually adjust the striking frequency. The base frame was lasercut out of MDF panels and painted. A Raspberry Pi Pico was used as a microcontroller for servo motor actuation using PWM position control, with the striking frequency being set by a potentiometer dial in the front of the frame. The motor tower was 3D printed with a minimal number of components. All components were joined by precise press-fit, a single screw, a total of six small bolts and minimal adhesives.
